First animal-free casein factory in the region

The new plant will be a “first of its kind” in the region to produce animal-free casein needed to make cheese, Change Foods says. Its location in the Persian Gulf is strategic and will provide a shipping and distribution network between the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates, said: “We are delighted to welcome Change Foods to the United Arab Emirates and to further catalyze the country’s food technology ecosystem, which will will help reduce our dependence on imports, improve local production and inspire new innovations.

On track for category break

Change Foods is focused on disrupting the dairy cheese industry, which the company says is an $83 billion global food category and one of the world’s most popular foods. As part of this mission, Change foods raised $15.3 million in seed funding in February, which is the biggest seed ever raised for a precision fermentation company.

Change foods claims that its casein is bio-identical to the traditional dairy counterpart, but since it is completely animal-free, it causes a fraction of the environmental impact of animal-based dairy products.

“Raising animals for food is an inefficient and resource-intensive process that contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions,” Bucca said. “We believe we can be a positive transformational influence for this dynamic and growing industry. It will be a great example of how the adoption of new technologies can help us overcome regional food security challenges,” he continued.

The company also shares that it is in the final stages of closing a bridge funding round.
