CHARLOTTE, NC — On what would have been her 100th birthday, fans of beloved actress Betty White honored her memory and dedication to animal welfare by donating to charities. rescue.
Last week, posts about the #BettyWhiteChallenge quickly flooded social media sites, suggesting fans donate at least $5 to an animal rescue of their choice on January 17.
A representative from the Humane Society of Charlotte said the organization received more than 1,000 donations, which raised around $70,000.
“It was amazing, and we’re so grateful for that,” said Emily Cook, HSC’s Head of Marketing and Communications. “Funds raised go directly to our shelter to help support the welfare of the animals that are currently in our care.”
Cook said the organization received a $10,000 donation from Carolina Panthers owners David and Nicole Tepper.
Stephanie Rivera, wife of former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, donated $4,000 that will help defray adoption costs for several long-term HSC residents.
According to a Facebook post on the Friends of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Services Page, a group that supports Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, the shelter received more than $14,000 in donations in White’s honor.
White died on December 31, 2021, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
