Lypid Raises $4M in Seed Funding for PhytoFat: Vegan Animal-Type Fats – vegconomist

lypid, a startup specializing in vegetable fats, has obtained a fundraising of 4 million dollars to develop PhytoFat, a platform for creating animal fats from vegetable oils. Lypid plans to bring its product to market in 2022 ahead of broader expansion in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Created by Jen-Yu Huang and Michelle Lee, Lypid’s PhytoFat platform uses microencapsulation to trap liquid vegetable oils in water, resulting in a product with qualities similar to those of animal fat. PhytoFat retains its characteristics when heated above 329 degrees Fahrenheit (165 Celsius), providing vegan fat with a juicier texture, better melting behavior and improved nutrient profile.

Phytogrease can be customized to suit different meat fat applications, such as chicken or beef, etc.Contains no artificial additives, hydrogenation or trans fats.

Use lighter oils

To create its PhytoFat formulas, Lypid primarily uses monounsaturated oils such as sunflower and olive oils — a feature that could help plant-based brands reduce the saturated fat content of their products, according to food browser. Most plant-based meats today use ingredients high in saturated fats like coconut and palm oil.

Additionally, the founders claim that all oils, gums, and fibers used in PhytoFat formulas are food-grade and have GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status, ensuring that PhytoFat is likely to receive full GRAS approval.

The $4 million fundraiser was led by Green Generation Fund with backing from Big Idea Ventures and SOSV’s IndieBio, among other companies. By delivering tastier, healthier fats with higher melting points, the founders of Lypid say PhytoFat offers a revolutionary way to make meats without animals.

“We see fat as a critical catalyst for taking meat alternatives to the next level – tastier, healthier and more sustainable,” the co-founder said. Jen Yu Huang. “Now our goal is to bring the production of PhytoFat to the industrial level. We aim to produce more than 10 tons per year for each production line.
