PROPERTY developer Tropicana Corporation Bhd has lent a hand in supporting over 400 rescued pets and strays at My Pets Haven in Setia Alam and PAWS Animal Welfare Shelter in Ara Damansara, both in Selangor.
Organized by the group’s charitable arm, the Tropicana Foundation, the initiative saw 20 volunteers participate in cleaning the cages, preparing food as well as walking and feeding the animals.
The foundation donated 380 kg of dry pet food, 50 liters of washing up liquid, 60 liters of bleach and 60 kg of soap powder in total.
Tropicana Group Chief Executive Dion Tan said the campaign was important to raise awareness of the problem of abandoned pets and strays.
“This charitable endeavor marks the growth of the Tropicana Foundation as we provide aid to our furry friends.
“Animal welfare is an important issue that needs to be addressed.
“These homeless animals have their rights, but stray animals on our streets also pose a possible long-term public health threat.
“As a society, we all have a role to play and with this initiative, Tropicana will strive to redefine the art of living for both our community and animals,” he said.
My Pets Haven founder Aileen Lee stressed the need for the public to start adopting and stop buying.
She also stressed the importance of neutering and neutering homeless animals to control the population of stray dogs and cats.
She added that My Pets Haven constantly needs funding for animal food and medical treatment.
Running the shelter alone, Lee, affectionately known as Aunty Aileen, starts her day as early as 5 a.m. walking the dogs, cooking their meals, cleaning their cages and doing other chores.
She relies heavily on volunteers to help her with all tasks to provide a conducive and clean environment for the cats and dogs in her shelter.
PAWS, the shelter which currently houses more than 400 cats and dogs, also needs public assistance, in cash or in kind, as well as volunteers.
Tropicana will continue to partner with various refuges in need, emphasizing its commitment to continue to engage and uplift disadvantaged segments of society, as part of its sustainable approach to environmental, social and corporate governance principles. .
