Santa Barbara Humane Society to Turn Over Control of Large Animal Rescues to County Animal Services | Local News

the Humane Society of Santa Barbara hands over the reins of large animal rescue to Santa Barabara County Animal Services to focus on basic community services.

“We asked ourselves how the Santa Barbara Humane Society could best serve the animals and people in our community, and decided to focus on the services we know the community needs every day,” said CEO Kerri. Burns. .

The company will focus on cat and dog adoptions, dog training and affordable veterinary services that meet key community needs, according to Dori Villalon, vice president of campus operations for the organization.

There is a high demand for affordable veterinary checkups in the area, Villalon said, and the Humane Society offers low-cost vaccination and wellness appointments.

“We want to focus on those services that we know people need on a daily basis,” she said.

To help with the transition of County Animal Services’ new large animal disaster response team, the Humane Society donated thousands of dollars in equipment needed to carry out its operations.

“It just seems more logical for Animal Services to take on this role,” Villalon said.

The Humane Society has collected specialized slings, ropes and even repellent material over the years that it will pass on to county animal services, according to Villalon.

“They were eager to come get the equipment,” she said. “It would be a real challenge for them to find the funding to get a head start on the program themselves.”

The Humane Society will still be available to work with the county and provide assistance if needed, but will continue to support the community in the event of a disaster by providing free pet boarding to evacuated residents and providing mutual aid to affected shelters. .
